Specific Considerations for Luxury Homes

Luxury homes in San Diego are often situated on larger lots. If you are looking in areas like Rancho Santa Fe, lots frequently are measured in acres. Higher landscape maintenance costs are one consideration of purchasing a luxury home, and that cost can be significant on particularly large estates. In Rancho Santa Fe, some of the larger properties may have full-time staff simply to tend to landscape maintenance.

Some luxury homes in San Diego are in areas of high and very high fire risk. This is important to be aware of in terms of safety, insurability (including insurance costs), and landscape maintenance requirements. Coastal homes are less likely to fall into very high fire risk categories but can have their own risks such as coastal erosion and land movement for homes on highly sloped lots.

If local schools are a factor in your decision, San Diego’s luxury homes are frequently found in areas known for good schools. Although crime is relatively low in San Diego when compared with other big US cities, crime rates typically are lower in the more affluent suburbs of San Diego.
